FAQ
« on: August 21, 2001, 06:29:09 PM »
i decided to make a faq to reduce some of the unnecessary posts here.  if anyone has any USEFULL stuff to add to it, go ahead =]  (stop adding comments about how lame this thread is plz)

Q: whats the difference between types of vcds? (ie: telesync, telecine, screener, etc)
A: http://www.cdrinfo.com/articles/videocd/index.shtml (scroll down to the word CAM, TELESYNC, etc)

Q: how do i extract a movie out of the RAR files, or bin/cue files?  and how do i watch (s)vcds?
A: use WinRAR (http://www.rarsoft.com) to unrar the bin/cue file.  you can use vcdgear (http://www.vcdgear.com) to convert the bin/cue into a .mpg file (download vcdgear 2.0, and leave all the options unchecked, load the .cue file and press go).  checkout http://www.vcdhelper.com/plaympg.htm for more info on playing.

Q: what dvd players can play (s)vcds?
A: http://www.vcdhelper.com/dvdplayers.php

Q: whats the difference between vcd, svcd, X-VCD, S-X-VCD, and DivX ;-)?
A: vcd uses mpeg1 technology, svcd uses mpeg2 technology.  X(s)VCD means the rip goes out of the specifications for the format its in.  meaning that it might have a very high bitrate, resolution, etc.  DivX ;-) is a codec that combines mpeg4 video and mpeg3 audio, you can also put AC3 sound in DivX ;-).

Q: can DivX ;-) play on a dvd player?
A: no.  it can only be played on a computer.  if you want to watch it on a tv, you have to have a tv-out card.  i suggest the ati radeon ve.

Q: how do i rip a dvd?
A: http://www.doom9.org , click GUIDES

Q: how do i convert DivX to (S)VCD?  or vise versa?  or how about SVCD -> VCD?
A: http://www.vcdhelper.com/convert.htm

Q: whats the watermark on some vcds? (ie: NB, A, globe, CK, MB, Z, etc)
A: those vcds are from asian countries.  the watermark is a way of tagging the respective bootlegers work.

Q: whats better: vcd, svcd, or divx?
A: svcd and divx are near-dvd quality, vcd is sub-vhs quality.  the quality between svcd and divx has been debated a lot, and they both have their strengths and weaknesses.  its a matter of personal preference.

Q: WHEN WILL ____(insert movie)____ COME OUT IN GOOD QUALITY?!?!?!?!?!
A: be patient.  a bad CAM of a movie usually comes out within the first week of it playing in movie theaters.  a good telesync usually takes 2-3 weeks.  a good telecine or screener can take anywhere from several days to several months.

Q: my movie is out of sync (the video and audio dont go together).  how can i fix it?
A: for DivX ;-) syncing, checkout http://www.doom9.org/virtualdub_procedures.htm#mansynch and for (s)vcd syncing checkout http://www.doom9.org/mpg/vcd_manual_synch.htm

Q: whats the difference between PAL, NTSC, and FILM?
A: PAL is the standard for europe, and NTSC is the standard for usa.  FILM runs at 23.976 fps (frames per second).  PAL uses a frame rate of 25 fps, NTSC uses a frame rate of 29.97 fps.  PAL uses a larger resolution, and therefore looks better.  NTSC uses whats called "interlacing" to change FILM into 29.97 fps, the result means bad coloring, and a very faint, constant flicker.  for more info on interlacing, and how to do an inverse telecine (IVTC means to change 29.97 fps back to 23.976 fps), checkout http://www.doom9.org/synch.htm

Q: where can i download/trade free movies?
A: read the rules, and checkout http://www.mpaa.org
before drugs i used to have lots of problems, now i only have one!! DRUGS!!!

I've removed all the crap chatter and off-topic bullshit you guys replied to this post. Be glad someone takes the time to write it all down for the newbies. It's in your best interest too; saves you reading all those requests, 'How's-the-quality' posts etc.
