GPU oc'ing
« on: February 01, 2015, 10:57:07 PM »
So i'm trying to get few more FPS from my GeForce 760 GTX but i get no result, even if get much higher clock rate.
Is my cpu a bottleneck?  Im still using an old core 2 quad @ 3ghz.

I would guess that you CPU is bottlenecking. It might be more or less obvious depending on the game, usually the higher the resolution, the less the cpu has to work.

BF4 is very hard on the cpu.

How are you checking if you are not seeing any benefits with overclocking?

GPU benchmarks only stress the GPUs, you will not see much change there.

The cpu might be getting too warm and throttling thereby nullifying any performance gains.

An other way to see where the limit is would be to overclock the GPU.

Sandy bridge did bring a revolution in CPUs. A 2500k or a 2600k kan still max a single card and will probably last a generation or two more. After them it was been slight evolutions and improved efficiency.  I tried to run an E6850 with a gtx 580, it worked with a few games and was a decent upgrade from a 8800gtx but then came bf3... and 30fps. Went over to a 2600k and jumped over to 60 fps. A quad core from that era can manage a lot better but still... It's time to upgrade...

I use fraps to see the framerate.  Im currently playing Dying Light.

I might get a I5 4690k soon.
Not sure about a new graphic card yet, the 970 seems to be quite a mess with the double memory pool.

Upgrade your cpu. When AMD makes their move in the spring you could get a 970 a lot cheaper. The memory pool bs has been blown out of proportion. A 4690k would be a very decent upgrade.

970 still kicks ass in nearly all situations regardless of the 3.5g memory issue. and a cpu upgrade wont do that much as most games are not cpu limited. Plus to get a good cpu, you'll probably need a new mobo too. What kind of core2 do you have, 2500k or so? Unless you are much older than a 2500k I think you are better off spending on gfx. Also an SSD if you dont have one, those are the two best upgrades for most systems.

if I was you, I would wait until the price drops on a 970 and then sell your 760 for $100 bucks or whatever you can get. Then use that money to upgrade to a 970. or wait till the 960 TI comes out for a better midrange option than the current 960 (960 is not really an improvement over 760).

I do that trade up tactic all the time. I sold my 760 four months ago for like $130 I think... if you time it right and dont wait too long to sell, you can make back around 60-70% of what you paid. Then I used that to buy a 970. You can try amazon or ebay (or craigslist if you want to trade it for sex.)

The last of the Core 2 quads were released around mid -08. I would guess he has a Core 2 Quad Q9650 (or Q9650) that was released in 2007. An i5 is a Core i5...

Dying Light has problems with CPU utilization. Check if it's using all of the cores. TotalBiscuit had some top line i7 clocking 100% on first core with all the rest doing 20% or so. Reduce draw distance in DL, it's suppose to improve the performance.

Yeah memory pool is bs unless you're intentionally maxing out the card to kill its performance. 970's a solid card for its price range.

You are just too stupid. Complaining about low fps because you have an ancient computer. What do you expect?

If you don't want (or can ....no money) buy new hardware, you can play older games like Tomb Raoder 1 and stick with that.

And now you only have onboard video? WTF?
