External Backup Options
« on: January 12, 2015, 02:27:32 PM »
Yesterday I needed to get something off my Seagate FreeAgent 500gb external but it wouldn't connect and the power light would die after 30 seconds. I won't be able to disassemble it until tonight to see if the data is safe but a multimeter shows the power adapter is fine. There are a bunch of family photos on there and I was going to copy everything this week to be safe, but it didn't seem urgent since I don't use the FreeAgent frequently.  :(

Last night I briefly took a look at storage options to avoid this in the future and RAID 1 is a must, and included backup software that works as advertised would be great. Cloud and network access is nice for accessing photos/music throughout the house or offsite but my main interest is data protection.

WD My Cloud Mirror 8TB 2-bay Personal Cloud Storage - $439.99
WD My Cloud EX2 8 TB: Pre-configured Network Attached Storage featuring WD Red Drives - $478.01

I'm leaning toward the EX2 because it sounds like it's identical to the Mirror but with better drives. Does anyone have experience with WD or other NAS systems in this range? 4TB after RAID 1 should suit my needs.

Once you go synology, you never go back. It might be a bit outside your price range but it feels more future proof than a WD and you more or less set it up once and forget about it.

I've been comparing synology models and reading reviews on Amazon and while the DS713+ is pretty loaded, it has a bunch of features I won't use and the DS214play appears to suit my needs. It has features for entertainment like SD/USB copy and hardware transcoding in addition to being a solid NAS. The diskless version goes for $360 on Amazon and 2x 4TB WD Red HDDs is another $310, making this $192 more than the EX2 but the customer satisfaction suggests it to be worth it.

HP Micro Server + WD 4TB Red (+ recycled HD and cracked win server 2012 r2)

That came to around £225 and gives plenty options for doing more than just file serving, which I haven't done yet.  It's basically a backup and Plex/media server.

I'll get another 4TB drive at some point and RAID them if I can be arsed.
