NVIDIA G-Sync
« on: January 03, 2015, 06:34:15 PM »
Anybody tried this out yet? I've always felt that games ran jerky, regardless of how good the system was. G-Sync eliminates the jerkiness almost completely. It's amazing how smooth the performance is. This seems to be a game-changer for me. I'm eager to try out 3D gaming next.

If this isn't a troll post, I just got a 144hz monitor and have noticed quite less screen tearing...  It doesn't have gsync though..
You know your game is crap when people don't even bother pirating it.

I have the Asus Rog Swift monitor with G-Sync (also 144hz)

I fucking hate screen tearing with a passion, and this is the solution.  Not only that, but it makes your perceived frame rate higher as well.  Games just appear to run a hell of a lot more smoothly with it.

The latest nvidia drivers had fucked with my g-sync quite badly in the sense that it wouldn't switch on at all.  I tried playing without it cos I couldn't be fucked diagnosing the problem at the time, but it was just horrible - especially at 60hz which is what the drivers kept resetting my monitor to.  Switching to 144hz improved but there was still noticeable tearing, especially in slower moving games.  Rolled back and that fixed it.

Slightly off topic - I also had the Acer 4K g-sync for a while, to compare the two (I actually had that first).  4K is jaw-droppingly beautiful but I couldn't handle the 60fps limit.  It also destroyed the immersion of some older games that were never designed to be seen in 4k.  Deus Ex HR made my eyes wretch in horror, although t doesn't look so terrible at 2560x1440.  Alien Isolation on the other hand looks great at both resolutions.

I would say get a G-Sync monitor if you can afford it.

Well I'd love to have it.  TN panels have put me off... Until now, Acer's XB270HU looks to be a game changer.

Specs - 27" IPS Monitor, QHD (2560 x 1440), 144 Hz refresh rate, 1 ms response time and of course G-Sync support.

Probably an unholy price to match though, available around April.

Yeah, I just purchased the Asus monitor. I looked at the Acer, but 4k seems like overkill for such a small screen. Also, the Acer doesn't have 3D. I'm dying to try it if I can find a set of glasses.

Those are exactly the same specs as the Asus.  The Acer will no doubt be cheaper, but will have worse build quality and probably a larger bezel.

How are you finding it so far?
My only gripe with it is it's selective blurry text in certain core Windows apps, but it's purely for gaming so doesn't matter too much.

The Asus is a TN panel.

One thing to note about g-sync is that it only works on when running in Fullscreen.  It won't work on Windowed or Borderless Windowed.  I didn't know this beforehand, and it's a bit of an annoyance.
