Connecting a TV to a PC with standard LCD monitor
« on: October 08, 2014, 05:24:06 PM »
Need help in figuring out the logistics of connecting a TV to my PC.

I currently have a 24” monitor connected via DVI to my GTX 780. The output of audio is to the Logitech 5.1ch speakers which are connected to my motherboard via the standard three-prong wire (not sure how it’s called).

I now want to buy a TV (50” or 55”) and switch between it and the monitor depending on what I am doing. For example, I’d watch movies/Youtube on the TV, but use the monitor for everything else like web browsing, MS Office work, playing games, etc.

So, my question is, how to hook up the TV to the PC such that I could easily switch between TV and monitor and also how to output the audio to the TV when I am watching movies. Repositioning the Logitech speakers is not an option since they are positioned toward me when I work at the PC. The TV will be positioned behind me, so I would have to turn 180° to watch a movie on the TV.

Any advice on how to best accomplish this is appreciated.

Thanks.

Ok, easy. First of all, make sure you use xbmc (Kodi) to watch your movies/tv shows as in the audio output options, you can specify output device - so you can have pc sounds and tv sounds at the same time.

if you want to play games and switch between monitor and tv, id recommend setting your displays as 2 screens (extended), and forcing steam to use screen 2 for big picture mode.

finally, you want to be able to have complete control over audio. theres a program called 'soundswitch' which runs in your tray (freeware) and you can set a hotkey to alternate default audio output device, so getting sound from your pc speakers to tv speakers is literally just the tap of one button. msg me if you want any more help :)

Your GTX780 has an HDMI-out. You use an HDMI cable to connect the TV to the PC, setup multiple-monitor/desktops, and that's it.

As for the audio, I'm not sure what will happen if you have multi-desktop setup but I would guess that whatever you're watching/listening to on the PC will be played through the TV speakers and PC speakers at the same time. But if you are using a single-desktop setup and switching to the TV on-demand, that would not be an issue.

yeah just plug the tv into the computer's hdmi port and it will detect it as a display. in your nvidia settings you will have lots of options as to how to set that tv up as a second monitor. you can mirror both displays, but sounds like you just want to treat it as an extended desktop. then you just drag windows to the second display as if it was half of your monitor.

fuckin racist i hope you appreciate me burning up one of my last 2 posts to help you.

i use my tv for everything. just hook up the TV to your computer using HDMI, i dunno what 3 prong "standard" plug you're talking about for your sound card. but however you do it, hook up your speakers to your sound card. in windoze or whatever OS you use OSX mavericks whatever. set the main sound default audio to the speakers. now you can sit at your computer and do whatever blahblahblah and when you're ready to sit back and watch TV then switch your tv on and it will be your second monitor or however you set it, and when you watch movies on VLC like i do just make sure VLC is set to always use HDMI audio. set.

you are just like me now you racist, cept my tv IS my monitor and i just get up from my chair, jump into my bed naked. i'm always naked when i'm in my house. jump in bed naked with my wireless mouse and keyboard and watch some movies or last week tonight with john oliver.
it's 4:20, do you know where your bong is?
