Samsung EVO 840 1TB SSD
« on: July 17, 2014, 05:16:17 PM »
What do you guys think about this?

Is it good enough to replace a regular HDD?

I need it for my laptop but I'm afraid it won't last long?

What's life expectancy of this thing? Anyone with an experience with SSDs?

Costs $399.99 on Amazon which seems quite a deal (cost goes up and down quite fast)

unless you write more than 30gb a day, it should be good for at least 3-5 years. possibly more. Most drives are rated to write around 72 TB total, which for most people will take a long time (also you can probably write much more, but you're taking a risk after that point)

It may last longer than 3y if you write less than that, and samsung has a great monitoring software "magician" that will tell you what percent is left. I still have like 95 percent left on my 3 year old 830 drive, but that drive has better NAND.

in a laptop it should be fine, just make sure to disable/ reduce virtual memory, and disable prefetch and all that other shit. How often do you use this laptop/ do you do a ton of downloading, torrenting, etc on it?

although if you're really worried about reliability, get an intel 530 (5y warranty) or better yet the samsung 850 pro (being released july 21). granted the 850 is 2x more expensive ($400 for the 512 gb), but it has a 10 year warranty and uses the latest 3D nand, rated for 150TB and likely much more. I personally never buy any brand SSD other than intel or samsung, at least not on my main OS/important drives.

What isotope777 said.

But right now, using an SSD for storage is still a waste of money. Use it for the OS, some programs and games that benefit from it and that's it. Use an HDD for your downloads and storage, and most programs and games.

And btw, these days SSD last as much or even longer than HDDs.

I have a Samsung EVO 840 pro 500 GB SSD, and its fast. SSD disks last longer than mechanic drives, as there are no moving parts inside. My best guess will be at least 10 years and surely more. No heat, no moving parts, no defrag = More reliable and last longer.

You obviously don't know jack shit about SSD and memory cells.

The right answer is around 210 years barring premature failure.
How do we know? Because someone did the testing.

Based on 10GB of data written/moved to new cells per day, you get 700+TB of life out of the drive. Basically it'll outlive you if everything goes right.
Chances are your shitty PSU will kill it before anything.
I'll keep pratce

And whose gonna keep that current desktop/laptop anyway when the market comes out with something new every other month? You'll have moved on from that has-been SSD to something far better well within 5years simply by abandoning it completely to a new platform, mirror/cloning it to a faster drive (which I did recently), or simply copying current contents of value to the next big thing. Pah.. ~< 5 years most people have move on/migrated completely to something better.
Removed specs due to them being classed as L.T.B bait (Low Tech Bastard)

hmm, thanks for responses. I've been digging more about SSDs and they seem to be two types of ssds, TLC based (such as evo 840) and MLC based (like the crucial M550)

And the Crucial M550 1TB is going for $440 thinking about getting that instead, since MLC seems superior with its life expectancy.

You are just sad that you don't have the money to buy SSD....you don't know a shit about anything. Play with your ancient PC with windows Me and shut the fuck up! Let's hear some facts instead of just being an idiot!

It's not worse than your comment....you have nothing to say and don't know a shit. SSD is Solid State and has no moving parts and generates no heat. It contains chips (Flash) - similar to USB flash and SSD flash. They made the way for SSD disks. So if you have something else to add, please let me know.

There is an erasing limit on the flash memory cells and when that limit is reached, SSDs will not be able to write. He probably means that.

generates no heat.

Comparatively much less than mechanical drives, but everything that uses power produces heat.

I wasn't replying to tell you about how much I know, I was replying to let you know that saying something childish like 'you're just jealous you cant afford one' is the sign of either a child or a cunt. yet to be determined.
