Get SSD drives. And they last longer than hard drives, if you use them correctly.

I've got an SSD that came with my laptop (Sony Vaio) from 2009, and it is still running strong despite having the operating system installed on it, i.e. lots of reading and writing going on on it. It's probably a cheap SSD as well, considering that it was a preinstalled one, but it speeds stuff up tremendously. Photoshop for example only takes a couple of seconds to start, which takes like half a minute on a normal 7200 rpm HD.

insert it into a condom and up your ass.

jk.
on a serious note, most new SSD such as samsung or crucial or intel will last a long time.
get a good brand and put the OS and games on it. Also have a backup larger HDD for storage.
and yes it is worth it. it is so zippy and fast. like night and day, apps and games open faster. OS starts 5x faster and rarely lags.

There's guides in the internet about installing and configuring SSD drives correctly. Tweaks you should do to windows.
This can be a good reading: http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdds

If you're planning to buy SSD either go for Crucial M550 or Plextor M6S, both come in cheap as fuck 256gb option. Both also come with 3 year warranty.

There is only one way to use a hard drive. But if you throw it out the window or hit it with a hammer, it will break. But who want to do that?

An even cheaper and faster drive from Crucial is now available too, the MX500 (512gb) - best price/performance/gigabyte for your buck at the moment and its steadily continuing the drop in price too :)

No, but somebody hit you....It was ironi. But if you know another way to use a hard disk, than usual (install, format, partition) you are welcome to give us a tip. Smartass!
