Could be, but I doubt I'll ever be interested. How many alternative (to the big 3) consoles have been promised to come out and never did and how many more have come out and slowly slipped to obscurity.

True, but on the other hand who would have expected a new phone OS to be released and climb to the number 1 spot? Google knows how to do things right, but the console world is a vicious place to get a foothold in.

The big 3? You mean the big 2, Xbox is very recent. Imo, Microsoft still hasn't put a good foothold in the market yet, if the Xbox One fails as much as it seems it does (Not even closing in on the Wii U, and Nintendo still has the 3DS to have the company stay relevant), I can see them dissapearing before too long. Google has a good shot at filling that hole when it dissapears.
