New console called 'Xbox One':

Quote
The Xbox One is an upcoming video game console from Microsoft. Announced on May 21, 2013, it is the successor to the Xbox 360 and the third console in the Xbox family of consoles. The Xbox One is scheduled for release in November 2013 and will directly compete with Sony's PlayStation 4 and Nintendo's Wii U as part of the eighth generation of video game consoles. Microsoft and various publications have classified the device as an "all-in-one entertainment system", making it a competitor to other home media devices such as the Apple TV and the Google TV platform.
Moving away from the PowerPC based architecture used in the Xbox 360, the console features an AMD processor built around the x86-64 instruction set. The console places an increasing emphasis on entertainment and integration with the Kinect peripheral, offering the ability to use an existing set-top box to watch live television programming (augmented by an enhanced program guide with support for voice commands), a built-in Skype client, and improved second screen support. The console also provides new functionality for use in games, such as an expanded Xbox Live service, improved Kinect functionality, cloud computing, the ability to automatically record and share video highlights from gameplay, and integrated support for live streaming gameplay online.

So will this (and the PS4) be media-less consoles? Or am I way off and both will still have games that come on discs?

I don't know about that really. The steam console will mainly be media-less and it's possible that MS & Sony will follow suit but I don't think that most console gamers would be ready for that yet ;)

Gamestop certainly isn't ready for that. And Sony isn't done with blu-ray.

According to IGN the console won't even function without Kinnect.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/21/xbox-one-will-not-function-without-kinect-attached

Pretty ridiculous.  Also, in order to play used games on it you have to pay some kind of fee.  Hardware specs and architecture are basically gonna be identical to PS4s, whatever difference there is will be negligible in-game.  I'm going with PS4 just to avoid all the bullshit MS is trying to push.  Fuck Kinnect.

You''d be a moron to buy either a PS4 or Xbox One. I built a beast of a gaming machine for a friend last week for £650. OK, more than the console prices once they come out, but you don't have to worry about subscription fees, £70 games and then being held at ransom.
I tried watching the launch tonight but after 15 minutes of Kinect talk before moving on to their 'Cloud' ideas I turned it off and refused to go back. That shows exactly what Microsoft want to aim towards...

I already have 2 gaming PCs that are more powerful than Xbox one or PS4.  I'm not buying it for the hardware, I buy it for the exclusives.

No backwards compatibility, no used games or lent games from friends, and all the DLC I bought on the 360 is now useless. Microsoft has only liberated me to choose between the PS4 and the Xbox One. I would've stuck to Xbox for sure, otherwise.
