Surround Sound Gaming Headsets
« on: March 26, 2013, 02:51:40 AM »
Do they really produce surround sound? I own a pair of Sennheiser HD 25-1 ii and love them, I've only ever read positive things about them. They're not surround sound, just a decent headphone. If Turtle Beach and Tritton headsets are so magnificent, why aren't they as ubiquitous as the HD 25-1 ii? The HD 25-1 ii doesn't come with a microphone, but I've seen many TV announcers using them with a mic attached.

But a lot of the gaming headsets have very positive reviews from consumers. Even the wireless headsets have positive reviews... Surely there is interference and lag.

Are gaming headsets an amazing technology or is it really just garbage and advertising like with those crappy headphones aimed at rap fans (Beats, Souls, etc.)?

Can't say anything about surround sound headsets, but I own a pair of wireless headphones myself, and I have to say that they work really well. They are Sennheisers as well, and they are on the upper range of models. Can't remember the model name any more, as I bought them in like 2005 or something (might be the RS140), but they are still working just fine. There is no lag at all in the sound with them, and they have a range of 100 meters (300 feet) if there's no obstructions in the way. I've been outside mowing the lawn with them on with the transmitter playing music in my room, and it works quite well except for a few areas that have a dip in signal strength and the sound dies, so as long as you're inside your house you should be able to walk around freely listening to whatever you have them plugged in to. I did sometimes get interference though, such as being able to listen to the neighbour's TV or something if I held my head just right, but it was only within a tiiiny area, usually with a tilted head in an unnatural position.

EDIT: Of course, this is Sennheiser, which is one of the better headphone producers out there in my opinion. I'm sure there are wireless headphones out there that are complete garbage. When I bought these, there were even infrared wireless, which would cut off as soon as there's no visual between the headphones and the transmitter for example. Also, it's hard to trust consumer reviews sometimes, as people can't always tell garbage from quality. Then again, don't listen to hardcore audiophiles either, as they are usually the suckers that go for the $200 cables.

Surround headsets are an absolute waste of money. I've owned 3 pairs, so I've been more than willing to give them a try... 2 out of 3 failed (subwoofer blew) and the third I sold on eBay after a couple of months. The 'true' surround headphones with 4 speakers and a sub are heavy... tilt your head forward and they'll fall off, then you have the virtual ones which are basically just cheap plasticy stereo headphones with an onboard DSP... something any sound card is capable of, i.e. Xonar DG, which has the added benefit of an onboard headphone amp.

So my advice, get a decent pair of stereo headphones and then just use the Dolby Headphone effect from a soundcard. I tend to leave them off for my headphones though as the effect tends to lessen the bass somewhat.

EDIT: If I were to recommend a pair of gaming headphones then I'd say the Asus Vulcan ANC...

Stick with the HD-25s you have, those are pretty much the best you can get in the $200-250 range.  And yeah surround headsets are shit, just like that Dr Dre shit everyone wears nowadays, overpriced garbage.  I wouldn't upgrade at all unless you're upgrading to higher tier Senheissers.

And ironically senheissers (I have HD25s too) are way better for bass-heavy music as well, anyone who buys that pop brand shit knows nothing about audio.
