XBMC users thread
« on: January 21, 2013, 02:57:33 PM »
Who's using XBMC as their media server or player?
What plugins are you using that kick ass?
Are you using any sort of front end like Maraschino?

I'm using it on my ATV2(s) to play across my LAN. Looking for ways to make it better or things I might be missing out on.
I am using some plugins like 1channel, icefilms, smoothstreams, radio (awesome) and a couple of others
I haven't built a unified mySQL database yet.
I'm using Ember and Sickbeard to do all my tagging/sorting of films.
I'll keep pratce

I use it on my living roomsetup, which is a 10m HDMI cable from my desktop PC, i've set my living room tv as an extended desktop and force xmbc to only use the hdmi for video AND audio - thats with frodo rc3 installed. I can still play games and carry on doing stuff as normal on my primary display. In my bedroom I use Rasbmc and i also installed it on my netbook too. on all 3 of them i use that aeon nox skin, navi-x is fantastic for streaming live tv & i also have the video devil plugin hidden on there too ;) on my galaxy s3 i have the 'Yaste' remote control app (dont think its available for ios) which is fantastic, far less basic looking than the official remote and is regularly updated with features.

I use it, and have done so since it was a homebrew project for the original XBOX. Those were the days...used to have all the console emulators installed and what not...

Now, it sits on a Windows 7 HTPC, and serves as the media player.

But I will be honest, for how long I have used it, I barely do anything "special" with it. Just the standard playback features and the occasional radio plugin.

Of what benefit is using your own mysql database and such? I see that with the new release coming up, they are moving strongly to interoperability with open source PVR support...but honestly, it all looks like a god damn headache to set up...

I'll be installed this on my Raspberry Pi once it arrives. Loved the original Xbox1 version so I'm looking forward to my long awaited (10 years?!) XBMC reunion.

I actually run xbmc on a 2nd gen pi in my bedroom for watching stuff when I go to bed. I'd highly recommend NOT scraping the folder to get art or adding stuff to 'movies' & 'tv'. Also, changing the theme to aeon nox slowed it down as well. I'd recommend running the basic theme and adding folders but doing nothing to them. Running 1080p MKVs directly from a usb drive or over network is absolutely fine, I find that files over 10gb generally make playback stutter, but I'm not sure if that's due to the network or if it's down to the pictures just processing the video. Hope that's useful to you :)

Little update for you, making sure you use the latest kernel/xbmc will solve any stuttering now. runs very well as 1080 even across network. Wouldn't scrape art or use any other skins though.

I can't wait to see how the Ouya goes.

I have an Ouya now and so far it's shaky. It seems to run snappy as hell, but random crashes a lot. Still waiting on better underlying Android versions to really see how it is.

What's wrong with scraping art for posters and such?  I'm using XBMC (Frodo) and love it.  Solved all my problems.

Have a nice day.   :)

Bumping this. I've had the ATV2/XBMC setup for a while and recently set up a 12 TB NAS but I've been far too busy lately to do the sorting/tagging that I intended to do (I've done little to none so my library is kind of a mess currently). I'm between homes at the moment but intend to revisit this when I move into the house in a few weeks.

What are people using as their media server these days? Is the ATV2 still a decent option or am I living in the past by not getting something else?

I'm still using an ATV2, but I ordered a FLIRC for my OUYA to test the capability of it with a remote. It's a much more powerful box than the ATV2.
That said, I think I'll eventually go all out and buy an Intel NUC (maybe just the celeron one) and use that with linux based xbmc. The reason being, scraping media on these small boxes is awful and slow.

The new Amazon Fire TV can be sideloaded with XBMC. People are reporting pretty good results considering the device has only been out for 3 days!
