New HBO series based on the first book 'A Game of Thrones' in the series 'A Song of Ice and Fire' by George R. R. Martin.

"Seven noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Political and sexual intrigue abound. The primary families are the Stark, Lannister, and Baratheon families. Robert Baratheon, King of Westeros, asks his old friend Eddard Stark to serve as his chief advisor. Eddard, suspecting that his predecessor had been murdered, accepts so that he can investigate further. It turns out more than one family is plotting to take the throne. The Queen's family, the Lannisters, may be hatching an incestuous plot to take control. Across the sea, the last surviving members of the previously deposed ruling family, the Targaryens, are also plotting a return to power. The conflict between these families and others, including the Greyjoys, the Tullys, the Arryns, and the Tyrells, leads to war. Meanwhile, in the north, an ancient evil awakens. Amidst war and the political confusion, a brotherhood of misfits, The Night's Watch, is all that stands between the realms of men and the horrors beyond."

After reading the synopsis, it immediately sounded like a winner for a good HBO series. I told my girlfriend about it since we both like the fantasy genre, and she said that she actually read the first book that this is based on and that it's one of her favorite books.

Well. I just finished reading 'A Game of Thrones' and now I'm even more pumped for this series. It's extremely character driven. I kind of want to open a separate thread just to go on about how good the book is. I see some people have already mentioned it in several threads in off-topic before though.

I came when I saw this.  I've been in the middle of the 2nd book for a couple years cuz i got on a non-fiction kick but I'll have to pick it up again.  Gotta love it when more than one of your favorite fantasy series go on-screen.  This show will rock worlds--got just enough sorcery to make it interesting but not over-the-top and intrigue that makes Tudors look like a walk in the park.  With hbo budget and rating I'm excited to see what they can do with it.

The books are great.
I hope Martin finishes the series (books) before he dies. The last couple of years he's doing everything but writing.

I'm really curious and thrilled about this tv serie. Good to see HBO is in charge.
It can't be worse than that awful Legend of the Seeker. Books were fine, tv series suck. At least Song of Fire and Ice are more mature.

Looking forward to this. SoFI is the best fantasy series out there along with LotR and WoT. SoFI is my favorite of the three. Should be a good TV show.

Oh, and I hope GRRM finishes his goddamn series already. It's been more than a decade since Storm of Swords, and all he published in-between was the incomplete Feast for Crows. Come on, man!

I've only read the first book of the series and enjoyed it very much. But since the author takes forever to release the books, I've decided to put the rest in hold, just in case he dies before finishing it or by the time the next books come, I've forgotten everything.

Now, with the TV series, I'm undecided if I should read everything before "spoiling" my vision of the series (characters, landscapes, etc) with someone else's vision...

What do you think?

Sabbath, that's a hard one and you have to decide for yourself. I've read all the books and I'm happy with how the tvseries look, but it kinda ruins the self created image I had after reading.

If this is supposed to be a good show, it'll have references to the books. So prior to watching it, reading the books should in theory be best.
The last book was average though. The writer even apologizes for the book and tells the readers he'll progress the story in his next book. What a dipshit. Why did you write that useless book then?
