Your CPU + GPU Hardware Choice
« on: April 13, 2007, 07:04:03 PM »
I always wanted to see what hardware people prefer in terms of CPU and GPU. So please vote on the poll above.

I have always been a devoted proponent of Intel and nVIDIA and have always used their CPUs and GPUs. The way things are going atm, I don’t think I will opt for another hardware combination.

Since this thread is stickied, we may also use it to discuss the future of AMD, ATi, Intel and nVIDIA and how might changes at each firm affect you choice of hardware. My second post in this thread will be on this topic.

AMD to "DRM" it's new CPUs?

Quote
My latest revelation came during a recent visit to AMD for a day of briefings, mostly about the Barcelona quad-core Opteron and the Torrenza direct-connect coprocessor interface. During that visit, I got the briefest of updates on ATI’s new GPU (graphics processing unit) technology. It will ship with software that plays movies on Blu-ray discs. The AMD rep spelled it out in words that would have been undiplomatic coming from me: He said that the new chips will “block unauthorized access to the frame buffer.” In short, that means an unauthorized party can’t save the contents of the display to a file on disk unless the content owner approves it.

There is a short list of parties who will be unauthorized to access your frame buffer: You. There is a long list of parties who are authorized to access your frame buffer, and that list includes Microsoft, Apple, AMD, Intel, ATI, NVidia, Sony Pictures, Paramount, HBO, CBS, Macrovision, and all other content owners and enablers that want your machine to themselves whenever you’re watching, listening to, reading, or shooting monsters with their products.

I think it's a bad move for AMD. If I remember correctly, Intel was planning something like that with their LaGrande technology but decided to scrap the project or at least make it available only on their server-side CPUs.

I always go for what is best instead of being a childish fanboy.

On the cpu side i was first on the Intel side but then amd xp line came and intel pretty much sucked at that point so i switched to amd.

ive been on nvidias side all the time except for the craptacular geforce fx line. altough i did buy two fx cards sadly, should have gone with a radeon 9800 pro.
was tricked by nvidias marketing machine more or less. what a load of bullshit that E3 show of their was now that i think back.

currently i have a large experience of all types of cards and cpu´s and i gotta say i dig intel + nvidia
altough amd and ati isnt bad either. the diffrence is pretty small.
and i gotta say ATI drivers are pretty stable now.

but as said if i have to pick ill go with intel + nvidia.

That does not matter. You still have 4 options when it comes to CPU/GPU hardware selection.

I like to go with what's best at the time, and AMD and ATI had the best hardware last time I upgraded.  Now obviousely there's no competition if you want dual or quad-core CPUs or the fastest video card right now, but AMD should get back on its feet soon.

my past systems ever since my p166 were AMD

and my past like 3 vid cards were ATI

but after a long run of AMD+ATI which i would have sworn on, ive switched back to intel+nvidia, cause intel seems to be better right now, and cause i just wanted a cheap vid card in the interim and nvidia fit the bill.

core2duo 6400 with a 7600GT

Completely agree with this, I went almost exactly the same way, except I didnt buy an FX, i bought the earlier Geforce 4 MX which was an absolute piece of shit (even for a budget card!). so yeah, Intel + Nvidia right now. Could go ATI depending on what they have up their sleeve, but not AMD (for CPU) since Intel are absolutely pwning 'their' market now :) .

Hell, I just go with whatever's the fastest at the time of purchase. Sometimes it's intel, sometimes its AMD. the last time I upgraded, it was AMD (4400+ X2). Before that I had a p4 2.53GHz, and if I were to buy now, it'd be a Core Duo.

However, vid cards, I always go with nvidia. ATi is such a pain in the ass with driver problems, glitches galore....and now their latest cards require ginormous amounts of power? no thanks.
