You can quote me on this - it will be a bigger success than the ipod.

i dont quite see that happening, as the cellphone market is MUCH more cutthroat than the mp3 market.

i see it doing fairly well tho; alot of ipod users trust the apple brandname and will probably get unlocked ones (b/c cingular suck ass).

Puke. You know what, as much as I love gadgets and all, I'm just not into these "do-everything" phones. My phone can play MP3s, but I *never* use it, I'd rather bring my "real" music player.

I have an mp3 player, but I dont' have to bother having another expensive thing in my pocket when I travel since my phone can play mp3s also.

Pretty sweet, but who wants to run OSX?

Meh...considering I'm always at work, driving to or from work, or doing something other than poking at a pda like a dork in my free time, I guess I'll never buy one of these any way.

Might be fun to play with while waiting in line to pay for groceries or getting a haircut though.

Think I MIGHT just grab one of these when they come down in price, in a few years :)

Only applies to Cingular users and people stupid enough to switch to Cingular.

Cingular is perhaps the worst cell phone company.

Finally some competition for the Treo market share.  I really would like something other than a treo hanging on my belt.

...the fuck is so wrong with cingular?

anyway, i'll probably buy this

I'd start by looking into the validity of Cingular's little dropped call study they site when they claim that they have the fewest dropped calls. I was on Cingular, and hated it.

You can't drop calls when you can't get service. I've never understood Cingular's "fewest dropped calls" campaign. Who gives a fuck about a dropped call? I certainly care much more about being able to get service anywhere I want.

That's because you're not the target audience.  MP3 players in general are used by people who use public transportation.  When you spend 1 hour or more on your way to school/work and then another hour to get back, you HAVE to do something during that time apart from staring at walls.  I think that's the most obvious group of people that these guys target, and if you look around, most young people who don't drive a car have some sort of music playing device with them.

When it comes to phones, Apple will have a lot more competition, since others have been around a lot longer, but the iPod was so unbelievably popular that right off the bat they have a huge guaranteed fan base, even if they made an inferior product.

I think they showed that having 1% of the market meant about 10 million phones...so really, even if they do badly percentage-wise, they'll still do well.

they're just one of the most expensive ones with some of the worst coverage, that's all

but all the carriers are pigs with their 2 year contracts and 200 dollar cancellation fees

I have the Cingular 8525 which is made by HTC. I like the phone, does what I need it to do and more. I finally got rid of the Palm that I had and never used, hopefully this coming semester I start to schedule shit in there. Best part is the wifi, I bought a fucking watch on ebay during my philosophy lecture this past semester, I didn't even need a laptop.

The problems I have with this phone:

- it's made by Apple
- it's overpriced
- it has a giant LCD screen which is dead easy to scratch
- very likely no removable battery
- I don't like carrying very expensive things in my pocket day in day out
- Mac OS X
