blu-ray/hd-dvd rips... when??

i've been getting a lot of 720p and 1080p x264 rips lately and i love them. especially if they have the DD or DTS track on it. i put them on my tvix box and watch them on my HD tv with surround sound. the quality is so much better than DVD and at only 10 gb a movie, the d/l times aren't bad at all, especially with a 6MB connection which isn't even that fast. looking back at azraels posts i dont even see why he was complaining.

A 1080p source is 60 full frames per second--pretty much rate of perception of the human eye (60fps for ATSC i believe is the new 'standard' name; Europe has 50) This idiot cut out 60% of all frames presented in the original. No wonder there's still perfectly detectable motion blur and jitters. That frees up a lot of bits to use on what's left though.

Actually, the original source (film) would have had a frame rate of 24fps (23.976 - as most movies do). So your maths is slightly off.

The holy grail of Plasma/LCD is getting one that will display 24fps correctly, since TVs are designed for showing TV which isn't shot at 24fps. Most won't (relying on 3:2 pulldown, etc.) so you end up getting jittering on slow pans. But 24fps is definitely seen as the 'ideal' when watching theatrical presentations, since its the original framerate. Assuming it was shot on film and not a digital camera that is.

I am building a little HD movies collection and getting 720p rips since my LCD TV is 720p and they are smaller than 1080p rips (duh!).
BUT, I plan on purchasing a 1080p capable LCD TV pretty soon.
I was wondering, is the difference between 720p and 1080p really noticeable? If I upscale a 720p release to 1080p with my PC the difference would be even harder to notice?

I've got a full 1080p set and to be honest, it's difficult to give an answer to that question. You have to take into account your viewing distance and screen size - if you're 20 feet from a 42" 1080p set, you probably won't notice much difference between 720 and 1080.

I generally leech 1080p on films I want the best quality from - examples being Transformers (which is simply stunning in 1080p), 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Band of Brothers TV series, etc., whereas I grab 720p versions of older films and non-action orientated films. Although I got a 720p copy of Rambo 1 and it's hard to see how it could be much better picture quality wise in 1080p due to the original source.

if your tv/monitor is under i think 42 inches they say the difference is negligible, unless your like 10 inches away from your tv/monitor.  i've gotten copies of the same movie in 1080p and 720p and i really couldnt notice a difference unless i paused a scene and really looked (you can notice on closeups of faces, on hairs etc) but imo unless you got a 50 inch tv it's not a big difference.

Thanks.
If money gets better in the next months I'll try and score a 50+inches 1080p set.

Thanks! Sadly I live in Venezuela so my choices are a bit limited and prices quite inflated :(
