i still download rips for games that i only half fancy, just to try it out, if its good then i will get full Cd version. When the game is crap at least i havent wasted hours downloading.

rips were mainly here because of slow ass dialup connection which makes it really hard to download 650MB for just one game, the reason is gone..

This not totally true.
Rips were here due to the fact that many years ago cd burners were not around, you could download a rip which was comprised of floppy size parts and save it. We didn't even have virtual drives in those days to mount an image with.
Yes, it's true that dial-up had something to do with it.

Back On Topic: I love rips! Especially being back on 56k. Reminds me of the good ole' days 11 years ago.

In general, I prefer to see the whole game; movies and all before I make a determination as to whether it is a keeper or not...hence, I may actually buy it if I like it! So, no RIPS for me....unless it is the only release there is.

You guys better get used to RIP-games!
Within 10 years most of us will track the
RIP scene instead of the ISO scene since
all of them will be released on DVD or on
god knows what...

Don't have high hopes on providers disabling
bandwith limitation since practically everyone
will have Inet access by then and I cannot
imagine any network having enough 'power'
to handle millions of subscribers leeching
avg 1,000,000 of gigs per hour :)

Btw, what's the latest on 'Internet via electricity
cables' ?

I still use rips. i think rips are still useful because not everywhere in the world has broadband access. I am still on a 56K dialup, and rips are good for me.

Yes, rips are No1. I say fuck the rule with 63F/2.88MB!!
That was useful in the 80's...

Such a shame, people start to give up while some games take only 150 MB.

Hey, you can burn 4 of them on 1 CD ! :)

It's unlikely that the scene will shift focus to rips.  While developers could use the full storage potential of a DVD, they are unlikely to do so, simply because content has to be created quickly (too quickly to fill up a DVD with content) to grab the consumers $50 per title and move on to the next project.

well, in the 80s, 63F of 2.88 each was way enough :)  By the way, any soft that was so big at that time?
More seriouly, those rules have to be updated, and I'm ready to bet they'll be updated.  Since it becomes more and more difficult to rip games (there are often games of 2cd +). That's why that scene is dying slowing.

I can see rips coming back in style, as games get bigger. But then again, bandwidth may increase at the same speed, if not faster...
