Kind of a neat story (and partially scary!) from the 25th annual Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin today.
"Researchers have uncovered a weakness in the internet's digital certificate system that allows them to forge counterfeit credentials needed to impersonate virtually any website that relies on the widely used security measure.
Armed with more than 200 PlayStation 3 game consoles, the researchers are able to create a secure sockets layer certificate for any website of their choosing. The forged certificate causes all the major browsers to display a message indicating the website the user is visiting is legitimate because it's been vetted by a trusted certificate authority using supposedly robust cryptographic measures.
Such attacks could make it easier for phishers to impersonate the sites of banks and other sensitive online services. "

Demonoid Welcomes BitTerrorist Hordes Back Into Its Adorably Decorated Fold
After quietly bringing its tracker back online in February, dormant BitTorrent tracker Demonoid appears to be back in business: A tipster forwarded along an automated e-mail he received from the site today: "We are pleased to inform you that Demonoid.com is finally back online... Your account is back and ready to be used again. If you have
problems accessing it, please use the forgotten password page." And going to the site reveals that there's been a change in adminship:
A few months ago, the site administrator (known as Deimos), lacked the time necessary to maintain this website. And for personal reasons, Deimos decided to resign his position as a member of the site staff.
Before leaving, Deimos picked a new site administrator from among his friends. The old moderator team remained unchanged and will continue helping with the site. The Demoniod team will try to keep everything running just as it always has been.
The trackers and website seem to be working properly, and should any issues arise, they will be taken care of as soon as possible. If we work on any problems over the next few days, the site might be going on and offline. We apologize in advance if this should happen.
"Personal issues" being code for "getting really sick and tired of fielding e-mails from the Canadian Recording Industry Association," obviously.

Google has acquired the online advertising company DoubleClick for a whooping $3.1 billion, which far exceeds the $1.65 billion they previously bought YouTube for.
Word had spreaded that DoubleClick were looking for new owners and that Microsoft and Yahoo! were looking into buying the company, Google came late in the buying race and thwarted the competitors attempt to acquire one of the largest online advertising companies, thus solidified their own position on the online advertising.
Most likely Google's decision to buy DoubleClick is that Microsoft will now be faced to build up an advertising division up from scratch and have with the acquisition made a huge blow for Microsoft.

A video is circulating around the PS3 sites at the moment which apparently shows a boot loader ( FERROX v1.0 PS3 iSO Loader ) successfully loading Ridge Racer on the PS3, so far the boot loader hasn't been tested by anyone and naoneo (its creator) has yet to release full details of the trick, but she is a known home brew dev.
If the loader is real, this would be record timing for the fair use crowd and will probably be a major annoyance to Sony to say the least.
Mad props to Flash67 for the tip off.
The video can be found here.

Sweden's largest bank, Nordea, has suffered the biggest internet fraud in history, it was announced today.
Over 8 million kronor (£600,000) has disappeared in three months as a result of tailor-made trojans launched by Russian criminals. Latest reports indicate that 250 customers have become victims so far.
The bank and the police have been unable to stop the attacks, but do have 121 people on the suspect list.
This is a worrying concern for any online bank user as the threat of cyber crime targeting 'safe' institutions becomes an increasingly real concern.

The phone will be available in June in the US as a Cingular exclusive for $499 on a two-year contract, 8GB for $599. Followed up by Europe in Q4 of 2007, and 2008 in Asia.
The phone will face a stiff competition in the mobile market, from main manufacturer Nokia, and SonyEricsson and niche manufacturer HTC which phones the iPhone seems like a copy of. HTC already have a lineup of phones that have touchscreen and wifi, with a full keybaord that slides in and out from beneath.
